Five ways to a calmer classroom

We all have times of stress and this simple to use reminder can help regain composure and reconnection. 

Try out these simple points for a calmer classroom today…

Relax… Relaxing is a great thing to do in class. You can use yoga cards or resources such as PausePoints©. Research has shown that yoga impacts on emotions and learning outcomes. Being able to Take Notice helps people to sense the current situation in their body, mind and surroundings and respond appropriately to it.

Hands-on Learning… Active learning is, for many children, a much deeper and more accessible learning process. Learning in the outdoors and making, instead of reading/writing can often help learners who struggle to focus.

Move… Some pupils find sitting still at their desk extremely difficult – sitting on ball chairs can help. Try to include ‘moving around moments’ where pupils might act out a story. Taking regular PausePoints© can also help those who struggle to remain seated at a chair or on the carpet.

Praise… Rewards are good but need to be purposeful. Don’t always praise on completion of work but search out other positive moments. For example, surprise a pupil by rewarding them for lining up so beautifully with their peers. Well-aimed praise costs nothing and showing your gratitude will impact on your wellbeing as well as theirs – exercising your ‘positive muscle’ will enable you to become better able to recognise the good things that happen, each day.

Little Helpers… Very active children often love to help – it gets them moving. Being helpful provides pupils with: an opportunity to please, to be successful, to achieve, to contribute in a positive way and to be praised. Examples could be: cleaning the paint brushes, switching on the computers each morning, tidying the books shelf, sharpening pencils, checking that coats are tidy etc.
